From £100.00
This trip aims to take around 12 students from across Gray’s School of Art (PCJ, Fine Art, and MA) to the International Ceramic Studios (ICS) in Kecskemét, Hungary, for a focused period of learning centred on wood-fired ceramics. The trip offers access to facilities, expertise and collections that exceed what is possible within GSA.
This opportunity will deepen their material understanding, support skill development and encourage experimentation within a specialist environment.
Students will stay on site and have continuous access to professional workshops, allowing for intensive and immersive making. This concentrated time in the studio will support both independent work and collaborative learning, offering a level of focus and practical engagement that is difficult to achieve during the regular teaching timetable.
The international character of ICS means students will interact with experienced makers from around the world, observe demonstrations and engage in conversations about diverse approaches to ceramic practice. These encounters will broaden their awareness of global ceramic traditions and provide valuable insight into professional studio cultures.
An important aspect of the trip is access to the ICS ceramics collection, one of the most significant in Europe. First-hand engagement with the collection will strengthen students’ contextual understanding and support research that directly informs their studio practice.
Bringing together students from different courses will encourage interdisciplinary exchange and help them understand how ceramic processes can be integrated across varied creative practices, from fine art and design to digital fabrication.
Overall, this trip offers a concentrated, high-quality learning experience that will significantly enhance students’ technical, conceptual and professional development. It aligns with the educational aims of Gray’s and provides an exceptional opportunity for students to expand their skills, understanding and creative ambition.
Works created at ICS will be transported back to RGU for an exhibition.
