Peer Support Group

RGU Peer Support is a student-led peer to peer service running on a confidential appointment basis during normal University hours. Our service provides an opportunity for you to come chat with a trained Peer Supporter about any concerns or dilemmas you may be facing whether that be in regard to your personal life or your studies.

Our service has been developed with students at it’s heart, we recognise how important support and encouragement is particularly during potentially stressful periods in life such as attending university.

Prior to becoming Peer Supporters, we have each attended a minimum of thirty hours training with some members of our team having completed Scottish Mental Health First Aid Training and/or Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST).

Mental health illnesses are becoming more common in today’s society (or possibly just more openly talked about). University students are possibly more susceptible to this, for various reasons such as impending deadlines, living away from home, struggling with budgeting, exploring their sexuality or they may feel they are losing control of any aspect of their life.

Who can contact RGU Peer Support?

Any RGU student can make an appointment with RGU Peer Support, no matter what they are struggling with. We are happy to meet with any student who believes that we can offer them any form of benefit. RGU Peer Support can act as a signposting service (advising students of services that are more qualified to help them) or we can simply be there to listen.

What happens if I contact RGU Peer Support?

When you contact Peer Support, you will be given an appointment where you will speak to a trained Peer Supporter who will listen to whatever’s on your mind and explore any thoughts or feelings that you share. You decide what to talk about, when to leave the appointment and whether or not you would like to make another appointment.
