As the 57°10 Architecture Society enters its 34th year, we continue to invite inspiring architects and designers from a range of disciplines to host a lecture before going out for dinner and drinks. These lectures, which are open to both students and members of the public, are held every Thursday in our facilities in RGU’s Sir Ian Wood Building.
In addition to the weekly lectures, we also host regular social events. This stems from our belief that architecture should be sociable and fun, and from our conviction that maintaining a healthy work/life balance is essential to getting the most out of our studies. In the past, socials have included beer pong, Mario Kart, gallery visits, sketch clubs and life drawing sessions.
The society also aims to provide an informal social outlet for students, built environment professionals and other likeminded people. This year, we hope to welcome speakers from a wider range of design disciplines, such as art, product design, graphic design, architectural technology and surveying as we feel that a greater variety of influences will be beneficial to our members.
We propose to incorporate the topic of employability into this year’s lecture series, to provide our members with a greater understanding of what a prospective employer looks for in a graduate. Furthermore, we are looking to encourage more early year architecture students into the society by offering all freshers the chance to join the society for free. We hope this will help first years connect with other likeminded students, as well as have access to an excellent resource which will help with their ongoing studies.
